Governor Mills Statement on Passing of Gloria Steinem

Augusta, MAINE – Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement in honor of Gloria Steinem, who passed away on September 2, 2026, at the age of 92:

“Gloria Steinem was a pioneer and the face of a movement that changed America and the world for the better. Her grit, intelligence, and empathy moved mountains, raising public awareness about domestic violence, sexual assault, and economic inequality—all while never losing her keen sense of style. Thank you, Gloria, for uplifting women’s voices, for offering your shoulders for other women to stand on, and for never backing down in the face of the good fight.”
